Let me start by saying that I am an accomplished guitar tech and luthier but know practically nothing about banjos. This one was bequeathed to an old friend and he passed it on to me.
So…if you are a budding Earl Scruggs or Ralph Stanley (or are planning to buy a gift for one) this could be your entry into the world of Bluegrass at a real bargain price. I’m seeing these HB 82A models used in the $275 range and this one is just about factory new. Also, the newer HB82As are Chinese and don't have the quality of the earlier Korean made version.
It came to me in its original shipping box with the factory tools and a set of (possibly used) finger picks. It has an American made Remo Weather-King head which, like the rest of the instrument, is brand new. It seems to be to be tensioned correctly but, again, it should be checked by someone who knows banjos.
Based on my guitar experience, I can say that the workmanship and fit-and-finish are really high quality…equal to a thousand-dollar guitar, at least. The Korean companies that build these instruments maintain very high standards. The planetary-style tuners work extremely well and hold the banjo in tune with no issues. Again, this is a guitar player’s observation.
The wood used for the resonator and neck appears to be maple. The gloss finish is impeccable, with no flaws from the factory and no handling marks. The inlay work is obviously laser cut is extremely fine…again very similar to a thousand-dollar Korean-made D’ Angelico or PRS guitar.
